The Tottenham Affaire

The very first novel written in Canada was 18th century authoress, Frances
Brookes "History of Emily Montague". It is an epistolary novel, meaning the
plot and subplots are connected together in a series of correspondence.

The Tottenham Affaire is written in the same style as Frances Brooke's
novels. This story is the accidental product of a joke email that was
written in the 18th century style. This email was replied to likewise in an
18th century style and from there it all just happened. Each and every
letter in the novel is an actual email written by one of the contributors
and relates to actual events that happened. Many of these events happened in
the 20th century but the overall point was applied to the 18th century
fantasy world we were creating in our letters. After about five or six
letters we knew we had something really fun going on and it all became very
addictive very fast.

Even if it was all for our own entertainment we feel the story stands on its
own and should be shared. At the very least we hope that people who are fans
of 18th century living history might try starting a circle of writing
letters in this style. After all email has given rise to another age of
written correspondence. Might as well make it into art while it lasts! Even
today some of those involved with the Tottenham Affaire are still writing
letters. Perhaps when the next scandal strikes we might have another edition
to offer you here. For now please enjoy the fruits of our correspondence and
a winter of fun.
